Competition Entry
The challenge as we saw it was to create an intimate grouping of houses and a sense of place within its rather dislocated environment, while still providing a high density solution. We have achieved this by providing an interesting variety of spaces and groupings of buildings and building types in the forms of courtyards, small terraces and forecourts, while still retaining a logical form to the layout. The blocks are set out at 90o to each other but this formality is counteracted by the roofs being pitched in accordance with the orientation of the blocks creating interest to the building forms.
There is a wide range of house types from apartments through to 4 bedroom townhouses which allows a variety of building types to be expressed. For example, two blocks of four 3-bedroom courtyard townhouses have been designed in the centre of the scheme. The houses abut against each other in a cruciform shape with windows opening onto private gardens or semi private courtyards.
